We are a generation of overfed and undernourished people. We have the most choices and the worst health. Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, Obesity are all on the rise.
How can this be? We have access to whole food, processed food, prepackaged food, farm food, convenience food and yet we are still overweight, unhealthy and headed for a life of disease.
Why is that? Where did we go wrong?
If you listen to the fitness gurus you will be convinced that cabbage soup, grapefruit and green juices is where it’s at. But what are we after? Is it really all about weight loss? Getting thinner?
Gosh, I hope not.
What happened to being healthy and STRONG?
What happened to living instead of counting every morsel that goes into your mouth?
If you are here today it’s probably because the food industry, fitness industry and all the conventional wisdom about nutrition has failed you. Industry professionals touting their new products or their newest diet plan have polluted the market with misinformation and distrust.
My hope is that after this you will be able to sift through the dogma and get back to being your healthy WILD self!
If you’ve been in my WARRIORS GONE WILD CHALLENGE you will know we have debunked the myths and are learning what it’s like to go WILD AND FREE.
WHERE WERE WE?
Let’s talk about where we were as a nation just a short 100 years ago.
Our ancestors worked for their food. They got up with the sun, fed their animals, mucked the stalls, tended to their gardens with vigor. They ate from the land and had very few conveniences to partake of.
They ate eggs, beef, rendered tallow, bacon and tons of veggies. And the 21st century diseases were few and far between.
They moved their bodies all day long. They spent time with their heads up, bodies in motion.
They went to bed with the sun and honored their bodies for all they could do.
They ate well, moved well and slept well.
If we want to go even further back….a few thousand years….we find our ancestors hunting their food on the daily. If they didn’t hunt, they didn’t eat. If they didn’t grow it they didn’t eat.
Where would you be today if that was the only way you could obtain food? How much convenience have you bought into?
WHAT HAPPENED?
Industrialization happened. Families went to work in factories. Children no longer helped on the family farm. Women joined the workforce.
BIG FOOD came to town.
With industrialization came BIG FOOD companies and their agendas….to make money.
They spend billions of dollars on marketing, ingredients and ways in which to make you addicted to their foods. And it’s working.
Have you ever eaten a “Little Debbie” or an Oreo and thought…oh, I’ll
Just have one. NOT ME! I WANT TO EAT THE ENTIRE PACKAGE!
But what about when you eat a salad or an apple or an avocado? Do you say….I need more of that right now! Not usually, your body recognizes whole, nutritious food.
The packaged food keeps you hungry. Whole food satisfies your hunger.
With BIG FOOD came:
Low fat
No fat
Low Carb
No carb
High fructose corn syrup
GMO
Soy
Processed
Packaged
Sugar Free
Artificial Sweeteners/flavors
Sugar alcohols
And supposed studies to prove that these are better for you than all that FAT!
I could go on and on.
WHERE ARE WE?
We are officially a nation that sits all day, stresses all day and eats junk all day. We are perusing social media for the next latest and greatest diet to lose our muffin top, shed the booty fat and we are getting sicker and they (BIG FOOD-GURUS) are getting slicker.
We are confused and in a tail spin with our health journey. We consume ungodly amounts of sugar and grains.
We have become a grain laden society. Look at the food pyramid…the foundation of the pyramid is grains.
How has that been working out for us a nation?
How do you get a cow fat? Feed them grains
How do you get a human fat? Feed them grains
We have the highest obesity rates in the world!
But what does all this have to do with dietary FATS?
Our bodies are designed to take in nutrients. Whole nutrients. Not chemicals, artificial flavors, hydrogenated oils and the like.
When we eat whole foods…or what I like to call eating WILD we find that not only do we feel satiated we begin to reduce things like inflammation, Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer and excess body fat.
Our muffin tops begin to disappear. Our bloating is non existent. Our complexion is superb and our bowel movements become regular.
Who doesn’t want that?
IMPORTANCE OF FAT
Fat in the diet helps with a number of bodily functions:
Energy
Cell Metabolism
Hormone Function
Healthy Joints
Brain Function
Blood Clotting
Muscle Movement
Just to name a few.
What happens when we go low fat? All those bodily functions begin to suffer and we wonder why we are experiencing hair loss, low energy, low libido, creaky joints, cravings and so on.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FAT
There are 4 different types of fat
Trans fats-Saturated Fats-Monounsaturated Fats-Polyunsaturated Fats
Without getting all nerdy and science-y I will tell you what each of these are in laymen’s terms.
Trans Fats:
This is a byproduct of hydrogenation (heating up the fats to become more shelf stable) that right there should be a BIG RED FLAG!
When trans fats came to town we saw a 23% rise in heart disease.
Saturated Fats: cooled fats- meats, lard, coconut oil, whole milk and dairy
I can go into how BIG FOOD/Universities/Scientists seeking grants have convinced us to eliminate saturated fats from our way of life. But, I’ll save that for another time.
Mono-unsaturated fats: vegetable fats, (olive oil, avocado oil, chia seeds, flax seeds) Omega 3s-salmon, nuts
Poly-unsaturated fats: corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil – Omega 6’s
Because we have bought the lie that saturated fat is bad we have resorted to using vegetable oils like canola, soy, safflower in order to cook and stay “healthy”. But in reality we are sabotaging our bodies. We are increasing inflammation, fat stores and a host of other problems.
When we substitute poly unsaturated fats for saturated fats we experience flabby cellular walls. This results in greater suseptablility to sickness.
If you’ve had your DNA tested with my test you’ll see that one of the markers they test for is cholesterol. This part of the test will show you how your cholesterol is most affected or what it is most sensitive to that creates build up…..99% of the DNA’s I’ve read shows that what is elevating people’s cholesterol levels isn’t fat, but sugar.
Refined sugar from refined grains is the culprit to most cholesterol, fatty liver disease and that muffin top you are struggling with.
There has been study after study of the healthy benefits of adding into your eating plan at least 25% of a daily intake of fats like butter, ghee, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil.
Decreased Dementia, decreased Alzheimers, decreased Type 2 Diabetes, decreased Cancer, decreased heart disease.
Add good mono-unsaturated and saturated fats in …..choose them wisely….enjoy your meals and stave off cravings and future disease.
I just recently added a video all about this. You can find that here.
